The emu is Australia's largest bird, and among the largest species in the world. Flightless, they are nevertheless nomadic and are known to travel large distances. They are widespread in Australia, at home in the outback as well as in forests and coastal areas. In fact the only place they are not so common is on the heavily populated east coast, where human settlement has robbed them of suitable habitat. For this reason, despite being plentiful in Australia, many visitors never get to see an emu in the wild.
