The Echidna, (once called the Spiny Ant Eater before the aboriginal name came into common use) is a shy and secretive resident of the Australian Bush. They live in healthy numbers in many parts of Australia, but you would have to be lucky to spot one. They are particulary difficult to photograph, because they will curl into a tight spiky ball as soon as they realise they are being watched. The greatest danger to Echidnas is loss of habitat, due to the human trait of wanting to move out of the city to live among nature...then cut down all the trees.
