Every bit as recognizable as the kangaroo and the koala, the kookaburra is one of the true icons of Australia. Their distinctive laughing call is world famous, and they are well adapted to life among humans. Kookaburras are at home throughout most of the country including developed areas. This photo was taken in the camping ground at Carnarvon Gorge in Western Queensland, where they had their sharp eyes on any food that might go unguarded from our barbeque.
